The foundation my parents laid for me as a child, never left me. Although I went off the rails, partied up a storm and lived heavily sinful, but deep down I always knew the truth. Earlier this week I defined faith with a simple meaning, acting like God is telling the truth. Truth is the hinge upon which the entire issue of faith filled living rests. If you don’t know the truth, you can never really know how to act in conjunction with it. So the truth of God’s character and his word provides the framework that allows our faith to thrive.

Why do you think the connection between truth and faith is so critical ?

STEP 1 – Recall a time in your life when you acted without having a firm foundation of truth? What was the outcome of that situation? Write this down in your Prayer Journal.

Remember the belt of truth acts as a hanger, so without the truth we have nothing solid to hang our faith on. If you want to experience the benefit of wearing the shield of faith you need to know the truth of God and the truth about him. Now many of you have told me you have never read your bible so much before, that is the only way you will learn the truth.

STEP 2 – Open your bible at Luke 5:1 – 11 and read the story about Simon. What was Simon doing at the end of verse 2, that indicates to you that Simon has given up? Write this down in your Prayer Journal.

STEP 3 – In thinking about the connection between truth and faith, what do think is the importance of this statement in verse 4? Write this down in your prayer Journal.

Step 4 – How does Simon’s responce to Jesus in verse 5 reveal some of the “fiery darts” he might have been dealing with? Write down your answer in your Prayer Journal in your own words.

STEP 5 – What did Simon say in verse 5 that reveals the moment he employed the shield of faith? Write your answer down in your Prayer Journal.

STEP 6 – What is God asking you to do in response to what you seen in Simon’s example? Write this down in your Prayer Journal.

Simon obeyed Jesus’ request even though he was exhausted, even if he was fishing throughout the night, even if he already gave up and cleaned his net. He pushed through. Jesus had spoken and that was enough, he listened and his reward was big.
